After four days of violence in North East Delhi over the contentious Citizenship Act which claimed 20 lives, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted appealing for peace and harmony.
“Peace and harmony are central to our ethos. I appeal to my sisters and brothers of Delhi to maintain peace and brotherhood at all times. It is important that there is calm and normalcy is restored at the earliest,” PM Modi tweeted.
“Had an extensive review on the situation prevailing in various parts of Delhi. Police and other agencies are working on the ground to ensure peace and normalcy,” PM wrote in another tweet.
So far, 20 people have been reported killed in the Delhi violence which appears to be one of the worst in recent times. A constable too succumbed to injuries in the violence that sparked massive outrage.
The cause of the violence is believed to be a clash between pro- and anti-CAA protesters after the BJP leader Kapil Mishra called for a pro CAA rally close to the area in Jafrabad where anti-CAA protesters had gathered on last Saturday. Virtually threatening the Delhi Police, Kapil Mishra had given an ‘ultimatum’ of three days to the police for clearing the road in Shaheen Bagh. However, violence erupted soon after his inciting messages and speech.
