The Congress on Friday denied media reports of a proposal promising no income tax for those under the age of 35 if the party comes to power in 2019 general elections. According to a tweet by ANI, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala on Friday denied reports that Congress is contemplating abolishing income tax if it comes to power in 2019 polls.
Reports inform that the proposal is in line with the party’s efforts attract younger voters. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress manifesto had promised jobs for youths within 100 days, if the party was voted to power.
According to a report by The Print, the idea was discussed during a meeting of the Congress’ top leadership on 13 July. Although no decision if the party will include the proposal in its manifesto, has been taken as of now.
Earlier this week reports informed that the Congress party was mulling on whether to offer a major tax sop in its manifesto. As the Congress is looking at preparing its manifesto way ahead of the 2019 elections, it is trying to tap the young voters.
